What it is
Giorgio Vasari built it in 1565 for Cosimo I de' Medici: a covered walkway more than 750 metres long linking Palazzo Vecchio, the seat of government, to Pitti Palace, the family home. The duke could cross the city without ever stepping into the street.
Closed in 2016 for safety work and restoration, it reopened on 21 December 2024. Inside it once again looks as it did in the late 1500s: pale plaster, terracotta floors and reed-lattice ceilings.
The route
- Start at the Uffizi: you enter from the first floor of the gallery.
- Along the Arno: the corridor runs above the riverside arcade, with windows on the river.
- Over Ponte Vecchio: it passes above the goldsmiths' shops, with the big central windows looking down the Arno.
- Oltrarno: it crosses over houses, passes the church of Santa Felicita and bends around the Mannelli Tower.
- Finish at Boboli: you come out by the Boboli Gardens, next to Pitti Palace.
