The David
Michelangelo carved it between 1501 and 1504 from a single block of Carrara marble that other sculptors had abandoned. It stands over five metres tall and has been at the Accademia since 1873, under its own skylit tribune. The copy in Piazza della Signoria marks where the original stood.
Don't stop at the David: along the gallery are the Prisoners, unfinished figures that seem to emerge from the marble, plus a musical instruments museum.

Tips
- Go at opening time or in the last hour: there's more room in front of the David.
- A timed ticket lets you skip the walk-up queue on Via Ricasoli.
- Pair it with the Duomo: it's five minutes away on foot.
