Where to have aperitivo, which squares to spend the evening in and where to dance in Florence: the guide for going out, especially if you're young or travelling solo.

Florence nightlife and aperitivo

In short: aperitivo runs 6:30 to 9pm; the squares fill up after dinner; dance clubs get going around midnight, mainly Thursday to Saturday. The right areas: Santo Spirito, San Niccolò, Sant'Ambrogio and Santa Croce.

Aperitivo

The Florentine ritual: from 6:30pm a drink, often a spritz or a Negroni (invented right here in Florence), served with snacks or a buffet. At buffet bars, your drink can almost become dinner.

Where to dance

Florence isn't a big-club city, but there are options. In the centre, Yab (Via de' Sassetti) is a long-standing name; Tenax, out towards Peretola, is the best-known electronic music club. Jazz Club Firenze, near Santa Croce, is a live-music alternative. Line-ups and opening nights change often: check their channels before you go.

Pub crawls: if you're travelling solo

The easiest way to meet people: an organised pub crawl takes the group round several bars, with drinks included and club entry at the end.
